I have lived my entire life in South Carolina. I am married to my wonderful husband, Brian, for over 25 years. We have two outstanding boys, BJ & Jaylin. I love to travel, love adventure, and I’m very passionate about history and the preservation of it. I received my undergrad from Converse College (University) in History and a Master’s Degree from Winthrop University with a focus on African American History. I began my career in history at Historic Brattonville in York County where I was the African American Programs Interpreter before coming to SHPO.

What do you do as the SC SHPO African American History Consultant?

I am privileged to be able to have the opportunity to identify and document South Carolina’s African American historic places & people and also provide assistance to individuals and organizations interested in doing the same. I also have the honor of being the liaison to the SC African American Heritage Commission.

What is your favorite part of the job?

I love that I get to research and promote SC’s African American history. There are so many stories left untold and so many places and building that have a rich past but their stories have not been documented in a way that can be shared with the world. Also, I love that I can give our ancestors who were enslaved a voice through telling their stories.

Who is your favorite historical figure or time period?

It is very hard to narrow this down to just one person, but if I had to choose just one of my trailblazing Superheroines, it would be Fannie Lou Townsend Hamer. Her undaunted fight for civil and voting rights through astronomical obstacles will forever be an inspiration to me!
