Welcome to Reference Services
The Reference Services Unit operates the Research Room and answers mail, telephone and e-mail queries concerning the records in our care.
We encourage genealogists, scholars, students, lawyers, state agencies and the general public to use our Research Room. Your investigations will be speedier and easier with the help of our staff.
The Research Room contains - a small research library; indexes to state and local records; microfilm of many federal, state, and local documents; computers; microfilm readers; and Xerox and microfilm copy machines. Wireless internet access is provided.
The Research Room will be closed on Saturday, May 29, 2021, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.
The Research Room at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History will re-open to the public on Wednesday, July 15, 2020. On that day, we will resume our regular Research Room hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Before visiting please read the COVID-19 safety guidelines for visitors to our building.
