The Official Web Site of the State of South Carolina

ArchSite(GIS)

SC ArchSite is the online Geographic Information System (GIS) that combines archaeological site file information maintained by the SC Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) and above-ground historic and architectural properties information maintained by the SC Department of Archives and History (SCDAH). Researchers can use SC ArchSite to help determine if a cultural resources survey has been performed and/or if any cultural resources and/or historic properties are recorded within a specific area.

Note: Not all historic property information has been digitized and added to SC ArchSite. Please review Historic Properties Research for additional research sources.

SC ArchSite has two levels of access:

Public View Map includes:

  • National Register of Historic Places property listings (unrestricted)
  • Above-ground historic and architectural properties evaluated for National Register eligibility (surveyed after 1990)
  • County-wide historic and architectural survey data for select counties

Access to the Public View Map is free and does not require an account or signed license agreement.

Subscriber View Map provides access to all of the state's cultural resource digital files including:

  • National Register of Historic Places property listings (restricted and unrestricted)
  • Above-ground historic and architectural properties evaluated for National Register eligibility (surveyed after 1990)
  • Archaeological site locations and site files as PDFs
  • Areas surveyed for cultural resources (primarily since 1998)
  • County-wide historic and architectural survey data for select counties
  • Civil War earthworks thematic survey data
  • Covenants held by the State Historic Preservation Office

Access to the Subscriber View Map is available to cultural resource professionals, environmental consultants, and planners. Subscriber View access is password protected in order to restrict access to sensitive information. All organizations requesting Subscriber View access must sign a License Agreement and complete the Subscription Request Form accessible through SC ArchSite

Online access to the Subscriber View Map also requires a fee to help offset administrative, personnel, and infrastructure costs, see fee schedule. Free Subscriber View Map access is available to authorized users at computer workstations at SCIAA and SCDAH during business hours.

All license agreements and access forms must be submitted to SCIAA prior to receiving authorization to use the Subscriber View Map.
