Walled Garden

The Archives & History Center’s garden is a lovely place to take a break from research, have a snack, or simply stroll among flowers, shrubs and trees that are common to South Carolina. The garden is arranged to roughly represent the three regions of the state: the Upstate, Midlands and Lowcountry. Examples of plants in the garden include hosta, magnolia, and daylilly and, or course, the state tree, the palmetto.

Art in the garden reflects the diversity of South Carolina history and culture. Charleston artists Gwylene Gallimard and Jean-Marie Mauclet designed benches, glass tablets and text that tell a story of the state’s ethnic, social and natural heritage.
