Sketches the background of South Carolina's judicial system prior to 1868 and lists the colonial, early state, and antebellum court records held by the Department. The five early courts are described -- Court of Common Pleas, Court of General Sessions, County and Intermediate Court, Court of Equity and Probate Court -- and maps are provided which show changes in jurisdiction of the courts. The records from these courts stretch back to journals from the early 1700s, and this publication lists the kinds of records available, general descriptions of the information contained in them and the time frame they cover.
