Curriculum Packets
The activities in each of our curriculum packets are centered around a significant chapter in South Carolina history. Each packet brings the historical resources of the SC Department of Archives and History and other repositories to teachers and students in an easy-to-use, well-organized, and interesting format.
Each packet contains..
- Carefully researched and well-illustrated background material and suggestions for the teacher on how to use the activities
- Many attractive photographs, maps, and illustrations
- Facsimiles of original documents or other primary sources from the state's archives
- Vocabulary lists and student activity sheets for photocopying
- Learning objectives, basic skills objectives, a bibliography, and additional resources for students and teachers
- An emphasis on the multi cultural aspects of South Carolina history

Packet #1: Jehu Jones: free black entrepreneur

This packet is based on the life of a free black businessman, Jehu Jones, who was a well-known figure in Charleston during the first thirty years of the nineteenth century. Jones began his career as a tailor, moved on to real estate, and became the proprietor of the city's finest hotel. Jones is representative of the small, successful class of free blacks who lived in antebellum South Carolina and became an important part of the state's heritage.

This packet is based on the lives of Jehu Jones's children --Ann Deas and Jehu Jones Junior. Their stories describe the lives of free blacks between 1835 and 1860 and provide insights into the events of their time.
Packet #3: The Spanish in South Carolina: unsettled frontier

Published in anticipation of the 500th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America, this packet focuses on Spanish exploration and settlement of South Carolina and the conflicts created by the incursion of the British.
Packet #4: The Civilian Conservation Corps in South Carolina, 1933-1942

This packet gives background on the Great Depression and relates activities to the Civilian Conservation Corps and its role in the creation of several of South Carolina's state parks.
Packet #5: Heritage Education

When South Carolina was in its infancy, women were playing a critical role in the founding of the colony and the state. The reader meets four women: Judith Ladson, an African- American; Mary Musgrove Matthews Bosomworth, of Native American and European descent; and Europeans Mary Gloud and Elizabeth Haig. The Many Faces of Slavery is a compilation of eleven annotated documents from the holdings of the South Carolina Archives. The documents offer a microscopic view of slavery in antebellum South Carolina. Sometimes poignant and often disturbing, these documents offer insights into the lives of South Carolina's slave population. Topics include manumission, contracts, maroons, religion, crime and punishment, miscegenation, and family relationships.
